The road weary Arizona Diamondbacks return from the east coast to face the San Diego Padres.
People that follow the Padres know this team has hot and cold streaks like any other team, but the good times don't last as long as the bad and I think their record tells us as much. Just not enough scoring going on at Petco and the arms aren't strong enough to carry the load all by their lonesome. The pitching did carry the load until the 13th where the Cubs pushed two runs across before the Padres tied in the bottom of the inning and won it in the 15th for a 3-2 victory. Andrew Cashner was brilliant for seven scoreless innings with four relievers keeping the Cubs in check until runs scored on an error and sacrifice fly versus Brad Boxberger gave the Cubbies a 2-0 lead. An RBI triple from Ronnie Cedeno, who scored on a wild pitch, tied it with Nick Hundley rapping a run scoring single in the 15th. San Diego is scheduled to send Tyson Ross to the mound to face Arizona on Monday. Ross saw his string of five quality starts end in an 8-1 loss to Pittsburgh, with five runs scored (four earned) on six hits and two BB in 6.1 frames.

With each loss the Diamondbacks suffer, the National League West and Wild Card gets farther and farther away. In my view, the Snakes need a Dodgers type run to end the year to even sniff the WC, not to mention plenty of help as well. Zona took a 9-5 loss in Philadelphia on Sunday for their fifth defeat in seven games, which has them in desperation mode. Patrick Corbin had one of his roughest outings of 2013 with all nine runs allowed (eight earned) on seven hits and a trio of free passes through 5.1 innings pitched. The offense was competitive on eight hits and three walks with AJ Pollack blasting a three-run homer. Brandon McCarthy toes the rubber Monday against the rival Padres hoping to snap a five game slide. McCarthy has struggled the past two times out with eleven runs allowed on 15 hits and four walks in eight innings.
This will be tough for San Diego after Sunday's marathon but the Diamondbacks didn't have an easy time in Philly. This is one of those games where I would rather make a small play on the visitors or walk away...
