The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets continue their battle for third in the NL East.
The good news for Philadelphia fans is the team is playing about as well as they have all season. The bad news is it doesn't matter at this point and many fans probably don't care although I do because I want to see what some of the young guys do. The Phillies opened their series with the Mets with a 2-1 victory for their seventh win in nine games behind a sparkling performance on the mound by Cliff Lee who gave up the lone run on five hits and a walk while whiffing seven in eight frames. The bats mustered six hits and walked four times that saw Cody Asche rap a two run single in the 4th. Philadelphia hands the ball to Kyle Kendrick to secure a win over the rival Mets. Kendrick did not get a decision in a 5-4 victory over visiting Colorado with all four runs given up on eight hits and a walk in five frames.

The Mets have gone in to a bit of a tail spin while the Phillies have been playing good baseball. The end result is the Phils have recaptured third in the National League East following Monday's defeat. That was the New Yorkers 5th in a row where the offense has struggled with a great performance from Zack Wheeler going for naught. Wheeler continued to throw well but even two runs allowed over 6.2 innings of work was too much with Cliff Lee at the top of his game. The bats never solved Lee with only five hits and a single walk with Andrew Brown knocking in the only run with a second inning single. Left hander Jon Niese faces the division rival Phillies in his 4th start since coming off the disabled list. Niese has been outstanding the last two times out with a run allowed in each while striking out 13 over 13 innings.
I don't really trust Kendrick because you never know what you will get. He does beat the Mets and that's what I need so...
