The surging Philadelphia Phillies continue their visit to the Big Apple where they face the New York Mets.
Just when the Phillies were playing their best baseball the Mets said hold on and brought their rivals back to earth in a 5-0 decision. Philadelphia has still won seven of ten and own a small lead over their rivals for third in the National League East but as a fan of this team I seldom put faith in the good times lasting because they haven't. Kyle Kendrick had performed well versus the Mets but he proved past performances are just that; history. Kendrick gave up five runs on five hits and four walks in six frames. The bats didn't help with only three hits as the Phillies hardly looked like the hot team. Left hander Cole Hamels faces the Mets Wednesday looking to continue his strong pitching. Hamels has logged quality starts in nine of his last ten outings in which he has gone 3-2 with five no decisions.

The only goal remaining for the Mets is to finish ahead of Philadelphia for third in the National League East. One of the knocks against New York is the offense and pitching can be inconsistent and their record says as much. Having said that, the NYM put every thing together Tuesday with Jon Niese tossing a gem with three hits and and a base on balls issued in a complete game performance. The bats didn't crush the ball with just five hits but they did walk five times with Niese him self swinging the big bat with a bases loaded double that plated three runs. The Mets hand the ball to Daisuke Matsuzaka for his second start in a Mets uniform. Matsuzaka didn't have a good debut for New York in a 6-1 loss to Detroit in which he was charged with five runs on six hits and a BB over five frames.
I keep saying the Phillies are a crap shoot but do seem to have the advantage on the mound and should be able to hit and score here. I still wouldn't put my hard earned money on them especially as a favorite in New York...
