The Washington nationals and the New York Mets face-off on Sunday for game three of their weekend series.

The Washington Nationals have gotten hot recently, but the Mets cooled them down on Saturday. Denard Span had three hits, Ian Desmond had two hits, and Bryce Harper had a hit, as the Nationals scored three runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Dan Haren allowed nine hits and seven runs, while striking out three over 2.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 8-12 on the season. For Sunday’s game, the Nats start Ross Ohlendorf, who has worked as a starter and out of the bullpen this season. For the season, Ohlendorf has allowed 35 hits and 12 earned runs, while striking out 34 over 43.1 innings for a 3-0 record and a 2.49 ERA.

Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets took out the bats and used them on Saturday as they pounded the Nationals. Eric Young, Daniel Murphy, Josh Satin, and Juan Lagares each had three hits as the Mets scored 11 runs on 17 hits. Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler allowed five hits and two runs, while striking out three over 6.2 innings to get the win and go to 7-3 on the season. For Sunday’s game, the Mets start Jon Niese, who has won his last three decisions. For the season, Niese has allowed 112 hits and 43 earned runs, while striking out 77 over 105 innings for a 6-6 record and a 3.69 ERA.

Washington is 8-3 in their last 11 games, 7-4 against the NL East, and 4-0 in Ohlendorf’s last four starts. New York is 5-1 in their last six games as a road underdog, 13-5 in their last 18 games against a right-handed starter, and 4-1 in Niese’s last five starts. New York is 11-25 in the last 36 meetings of these two.

I have this one coming in under the total and that is my first free pick. I also have a free pick on the winning side and I will give out that free pick on Sunday’s 1stQuarter podcast.
