The Detroit Tigers shoot for another win over the Boston Red Sox in a battle of first place clubs.
With every win, Detroit inches a little bit closer to capturing the American League Central crown. The Tigers picked up a few more inches following a 3-0 victory that has the team looking at wins in four of five. A few clutch hits and a strong showing on the mound by Doug Fister did the trick, as he gave up four hits and four free passes over seven shutout innings to pick up the W. The offense didn't do much and didn't have to, with seven hits and a walk producing RBI's from Andy Dirk and Prince Fielder. Detroit turns to league win leader Max Scherzer, who seeks win number 20 at Fenway Park Tuesday. Scherzer failed to pick up a decision in a 7-6 win versus Oakland, with six runs plated (five earned) on eight hits, including two homers in five frames.

Boston appears to be firmly in control of the American League East, but they are still just a bad week from dropping to second. The bottom line is the Red Sox control their own fate and Monday's defeat was only their third in eleven contests. The work on the mound and at the plate had been on the same page in this stretch before the bats were quieted Monday. Starter John Lackey tossed a winnable game with all three runs given up on seven hits and a base on balls through 7.1 innings pitched. The Red Sox did struggle at the plate with their six hit, four walk attack failing to do any damage. Left-hander Jon Lester toes the rubber versus the heavy-hitting Tigers on Tuesday. Lester has been outstanding, with five consecutive quality starts in which he has allowed seven runs over 35 innings.
Scherzer is not unbeattable, but Detroit seems to come up big whenever he is on the mound. They'll need to do it once again because Lester and Boston have been tough...
