TV: MASN, CSN-Philadelphia

The Washington Nationals take the field at Citizen's Bank Park to square-off with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Washington won't be repeating as National League East champions so the goal is to finish above .500 and hold on to second. The Nationals took a step towards each goal with a 9-6 score fest win over the Phillies on Tuesday. This was all offense, with Gio Gonzalez getting the win, despite giving up five runs on five hits and a trio of BB in 5.1 innings before the pen finished the job. The offense came to the rescue with an eleven hit, nine walk attack that was led by Wilson Ramos, who left the yard and knocked in four runs. Washington gives the ball to Jordan Zimmerman Wednesday to try and give the Nationals back to back victories at Philadelphia. Zimmerman is only 1-2 in his past three trips to the hill with a 5.75 ERA.

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals Free Pick - 9/4/13

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Philadelphia has looked better at times since the firing of manager Charlie Manuel, but then there are times where they look as bad as they have all season. Tuesday was one of those times where a great offensive contest went to waste because of poor pitching. As a Phils fan I can say with confidence that the team has to win when they score because it doesn't happen often enough. Rookie Ethan Martin continued to struggle with five runs plated over 4.1 frames with four of the next five relievers giving up at least a run. The offense got a boost from Cody Ashe, who homered and drove in three runs, while hitting safely three times. Veteran Roy Halladay will be on the bump Wednesday, looking to pitch the Phillies past the rival Nationals. Halladay has struggled since coming off the disabled list after shoulder surgery, with an ERA north of ten in his last three games.

The question here is whether Halladay comes up with a good performance, which honestly is guessing. Zimmerman has been hit hard at times himself so this is no sure thing, but he is at least healthy.
