The San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks face off on Saturday in San Francisco for game three of their series.
The San Francisco Giants came an out away from history on Friday and while that didn’t happen they got the win. Hunter Pence had three hits including a home run, Hector Sanchez had three hits, and Pablo Sandoval had a hit as the Giants scored three runs on eight hits in all. Pitcher Yusmeiro Petit allowed just one hit and it came with two outs in the ninth inning as he came about as close as you cane get to pitching a perfect game on his way to a win. For Saturday’s game the Giants start Matt Cain who is 8-8 on the season with a 4.43 ERA and 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA in his last three starts.
The Arizona Diamondbacks simply has no answer for Petit and the Giants as they were so close to being on the wrong end of a historical moment. Eric Chavez hit a pinch hit single that broke up the perfect game and he was the lone base runner for the D-Backs. For Saturday’s game the Diamondbacks start Brandon McCarthy who still appears to be recovering form his head injury last season. For the year McCarthy is 3-9 with a 4.94 ERA and 1-2 in his last three starts with a 5.40 ERA.
San Francisco is 9-20 in their last 29 home games, 0-6 as a favorite, and 2-8 in Cain’s last 10 starts as a favorite. Arizona is 9-19 as a road underdog, 1-4 in game three of a series, and 1-6 in McCarthy’s last seven starts. San Francisco is 9-2 in Cain’s last 11 home starts against Arizona.
While San Francisco was high as a kite on Friday even in victory it had to be a little deflating and look for them to be hung over here.
