The Pittsburgh Pirates look to leave the Texas Rangers with a loss the the final game of their series.
After getting swept in St Louis, the Pirates were dropped to second in the National League Central and were probably a little stunned. It would have been easy to fold, but instead the Buccos have gone to Texas and won consecutive games, following a 5-4 decision on Tuesday. Francisco Liriano came up big once again, with a lone run given up over six frames before Mark Melancon made things too interesting, with two runs plated in the 9th. The Pirates also received a big night at the plate with 12 hits and Andrew McCutchen driving in three runs. AJ Burnett toes the rubber in Wednesday's series final at Texas. Burnett has been a steady member of the rotation, but has not gotten very much help from his bats and bullpen, which explains his losing record.

Texas and Oakland have taken turns atop the American League West and right now it's the Athletics who are the top dog. The Rangers have been in a slow down phase where they have dropped eight of eleven and whether they can recover and challenge the A's again is something we'll have to wait and see on. The Rangers simply didn't get an 'A' effort from starter Martin Perez, who was charged with four runs in only five innings, while the offense never quite got over the hump. Ian Kinsler drove in a pair of runs, including one in the 9th where the Rangers saw a chance to win go by the wayside. Matt Garza is scheduled to face the Pirates wednesday afternoon. Garza figures to be a key member of the Rangers rotation going forward, but he has struggled with at least four runs allowed in six of seven outings.
Neither pitcher has been real sharp over their last six starts or so and that might be a sign that the bats decide this one. I'm going to back the plus money, but this is a difficult pick to have confidence in...
