The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs face-off on Friday in Pittsburgh for game two of their series.
The Pirates are looking to win the N.L. Central and they helped themselves on Thursday, getting a win against the Cubs. Jordy Mercer had two hits and Andrew McCutchen, Marlon Byrd, and Pedro Alvarez all had hits, as the Pirates scored three runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Jeff Locke allowed three hits and a run, while striking out five over 7.0 innings to get the win and Mark Melancon earned his 14th save. For Friday’s game, the Pirates start Charlie Morton, who is 7-4 with a 3.44 ERA on the season and 2-1 with a 3.52 ERA in his last three starts.

The Chicago Cubs never got the bat on the ball on Thursday and they took the loss in Pittsburgh. Starlin Castro, Anthony Rizzo, and Junior Lake all had hits as the Cubs scored one run on four hits. Starting pitcher Christopher Rusin allowed four hits and two runs over seven innings to take the loss. For Friday’s game, the Cubs start Jake Arrieta, who is 2-2 with a 4.28 ERA since being traded to the Cubs and 1-2 with a 4.86 ERA in his last three starts.
Pittsburgh is 36-17 in their last 53 home games, 37-18 against a right-handed starter, and 7-3 in Morton’s last 10 starts as a home favorite. Chicago is 4-10 in their last 14 games against the N.L. Central, 6-15 against a team with a winning record, and 7-23 against a right-handed starter. Chicago is 1-5 in their last six games in Pittsburgh.
The Pirates took care of business on Thursday and I look for them to do it again here and get the win.
