The Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Diego Padres face off on Wednesday at PNC Park for game three of their series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates lost a big game on Tuesday as they fell at home to the Padres and fall a game behind the Cardinals in the N.L. Central standings. Andrew McCutchen and Gaby Sanchez had two hits each and Starling Marte and Marlon Byrd each had hits as the Pirates scored two runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Jeff Locke allowed seven hits and four runs while striking out five over 5.0 innings to take the loss. For Wednesday’s game the Pirates start Charlie Morton who is 7-4 with a 3.54 ERA for the season and had a no decision in his last start,

The San Diego Padres have a chance to play spoiler and they are becoming a thorn in the side of the Pirates. Jedd Gyorko had three hits including a home run, Ronnie Cedeno had three hits, and Tommy Medica and Will Venable each had two hits as the Padres scored five runs on 14 hits. Startimg pitcher Eric Stults allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out five to get the win and Luke Gregorson earned his fourth save. For Wednesday’s game the Padres start Tyson Ross who is 3-8 on the season with a 3.29 ERA and he has lost his last three decisions.
The Pirates are now a game back in the N.L. Central standings but more concerning for the Pirates is they just aren’t getting done. The Padres have a nice young core to build from and they will be on my radar early next year.
Ross has had trouble winning and this doesn’t look like a good spot to turn that around.
