The Oakland A’s took care of business on Friday, and on Saturday the A’s hope to keep the momentum rolling against the Mariners in game two of their three game set.
The Seattle Mariners fell to the A’s on Friday 8-2. Seattle was behind the eight ball early when the A’s took a three run lead in the first, and as it turned out, that is all that Oakland would need. The Mariners had Felix Hernandez on the hill against the A’s, and Hernandez, despite getting hit early on got it together and turned in a decent performance against Oakland. The Mariners will have Brandon Maurer on the hill against the A’s on Saturday. Maurer is 4-8 this season with an ERA of 6.48. Maurer has two career starts against Oakland, and in those outing the Mariners starter is 1-2 with an ERA of 6.75 and a WHIP of 1.42. I question how determined the Mariners will be in this spot, with just two games left of the season and getting blown out by the playoff bound A’s on Friday.

The Oakland A’s did what they were supposed to do on Friday, and that was get a solid win against a poor Mariners team, to help propel them into the playoffs with some momentum. Oakland had Colon on the hill Friday against the Mariners, and Colon was excellent against Seattle, lasting six full innings, giving up just two runs off of three hits. Oakland will have Jarrod Parker on the mound Saturday against the Mariners in Seattle. Parker has six career appearances against the Mariners, and owns a record of 3-2 with an ERA of 4.15 and a WHIP of 1.13. Also, the Mariners are only hitting .216 off of Parker throughout his career.
During the month of September, Oakland is 18-7, and on the road this season, the A’s are 43-36. The Mariners are 40-49 this season coming off a loss, and when playing against teams with a winning record, the Mariners are just 36-52 this year.
Parker has struggled lately, but throughout his career he has been solid against Seattle. I also really like the way this Oakland team has been playing lately. The A’s are outscoring opponents on average 7-1 – 3.0 in their last seven games and averaging more than ten hits per game per outing. Even with Parker’s recent struggles, I still feel taking Oakland on the road against the Mariners is the play in this spot.
