The Tampa Bay Rays and the Texas Rangers face off on Monday in Arlington for a one game playoff to see who faces the Cleveland Indians in the American League Wildcard game on Wednesday.
The Tampa Bay Rays controlled their own destiny in the final weeks and days of the regular season but they were unable to close the deal and wind up going on the road in a playoff to play in a one game playoff to make the post season. The Rays were 3-4 against the Rangers this season and 40-41 on the road overall. As a team the Rays are hitting .257 with James Loney hiting .300, Wil Myers hitting .295, and ben Zobrist hitting .275. For this gigantic game the Rays start David Price who didn’t face the Rangers this season but he is 9-8 with a 3.13 ERA overall and 1-0 with a 2.95 ERA in his last three starts.

The Texas Rangers led the American League West for most of the season but they were caught late by the A’s and then went into a slump where it didn’t look like they would make the post season. The Rangers got hot again late and won out when they need to and now they are two wins away from the ALDS. The Rangers beat the Ray sin four out of the seven times they met this season including winning two of the last three when they played less than two weeks ago in Tampa Bay. As a team the Rangers are hitting .262 with Adrian Beltre hitting .316, Alex Rios hitting .280, and Craig Gentry hitting .280. For the one game playoff to get into the Wildcard game the Rangers start Martin Perez who didn’t face the Rays this year but who is 10-5 with a 3.55 ERA for the season and 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA in his last three starts.
Tampa Bay is 8-0 in their last eight games against a team with a winning record, 8-3 in their last 11 road games, 1-4 in their last five playoff games, and 33-14 in Price’s last 47 starts as a road favorite. Texas is 8-0 in their last eight home games, 2-5 in their last seven games as an underdog, 10-25 against a team with a winning record, and 8-3 in Perez’s last 11 starts. Tampa Bay is 2-5 in Price’s last seven starts against Texas.
With so much at stake look for both managers to manage as if there is no tomorrow and to freely use both starters and relievers out of the pen and to change pitchers with every situation and that makes for a low scoring, and slow played, game so my free pick for this one is the Under. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that winning pick in the Premium Area.
