The St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox face off on Wednesday Night at Fenway Park for game one of the 2013 World Series.

After getting knocked out of the post season last year the St. Louis Cardinals are back in the World Series trying to make it two championships in the last three years. The Cardinals have earned their way into the Fall Classic by knocking off the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NLDS and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. The Cardinals were in a dogfight all season long in the NL Central as the Reds and the Pirates traded positions in the standings all season long with the Cards landing on top when the season ended. St. Louis gets All Star first baseman Allen Craig who missed the first two rounds of the post season and with the series starting in Boston Matt Adams is a likely candidate for the DH spot. Shane Robinson has only played in four games but he has made the most of it hitting .375 while Carlos Beltran is hitting .256 with a team high 12 RBI’s, Yadier Molina is also hitting .256, and Mat Holliday is hitting .244 with two home runs. For game one the Cardinals start Adam Wainwright who is 21-10 for the season with a 2.82 ERA and e is 2-1 with a 1.57 ERA in his last three starts. The Cardinals lost to the Red Sox in the World Series nine years ago.

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox are back in the World Series and with the American League winning the All Star game they have the home field advantage. The Red Sox are also seeking their third World Series in the last nine years after their legendary slump of not winning a championship. The Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS and then they knocked off the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS. Not much was expected from the Red Sox this year but they led the AL East for most of the season giving up the lead to the Rays for a day or two at a time and then regaining the top spot until they eventually pulled away. Of course the Red Sox will need to make adjustments when the series moves to St. Louis as they won’t have the DH spot which has been key for them as their best hitter, David Ortiz, occupies that spot. Xander Bogaerts has had just six at bats in the post season but he has six walks as well and three hits while Jacoby Ellsbury is hitting .400 in the post season with 16 hits, Dustin Pedroia is hitting .256, and Mike Napoli is hitting .244 with two of his hits being home runs. For game one Boston starts Jon Lester who is 17-9 this season with a 3.64 ERA and 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in his last three starts. Lester has been far better at home than on the road this season.

St. Louis is 4-1 in their last five interleague games, 4-1 in their last five playoff games as an underdog, 2-6 in their last eight road playoff games, and 5-2 in Wainwright’s last seven interleague starts. Boston is 4-1 in their last five home playoff games, 8-0 in their last eight World Series games, 64-23 in their last 87 interleague home games, and 12-3 in Lester’s last 15 home starts.

These teams haven’t played one another since 2008 so there isn’t really a lot to go off of there but we do know that both of these pitchers are just on top of their game in the post season and look for them to come out throwing smoke. There are a lot of ways to play this one and more props than ever and I will have picks on the winning side as well as other picks in the Premium Area but for my free pick game one I am going to keep it simple and go with the under for the first five innings.
