The Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers play two in Australia to kick off 2014 on Saturday.
The Diamondbacks have a lot to prove in 2014 as they look to challenge the Dodgers for supremacy in the National League West. After back to back 81-81 seasons the club added Mark Trumbo to the lineup with the hope of another 30+ homers and 100+ RBI's but despite the addition of his big bat the big news is the elbow injury to ace left hander Patrick Corbin. Arizona is a capable team but one that needs all their stars to be healthy to compete and this loss is simply devastating for a club that could use a boost on the mound and in the field. The rotation added Bronson Arroyo (14-12 3.79 ERA) and his 202 innings but no Corbin means a tough road ahead even if Paul Goldschmidt and Trumbo crush at the plate. Trevor Cahill gets the start after his jammed knee looks to be fine. Cahill went 8-10 a year ago with a 3.99 ERA in 146.2 innings.

The Dodgers were big news after the All Star break as they went on a near historic second half run to win the National League West easily as the only team with a winng record. The strong second half faded a bit as the postseason approached making this team look beatable which did happen in the NLCS. Los Angeles added Dan Haren to the rotation and Cuban infielder Alexander Guerrero but the club didn't need to do too much with most everyone back from a 92 win season. A full season from Hanley Ramirez and Yasiel Puig are two good reasons to sit pat and watch and let the chips fall as they may especially with money to spend to boost the team before the trade deadline if needed. Clayton Kershaw, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Zack Greinke head a great rotation so on paper this team is ready for the World Series. Ryu gets the starting nod Saturday looking to build on 2013's 14-8 3.00 ERA.
I don't know what the lineups will be for this in game two but Arizona and Cahill are capable of winning so for now I'll take the better team...
