The San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers face off on Sunday Night as MLB celebrates their opening night in prime time.
The San Diego Padres finished the 2013 MLB baseball season 10 games under .500 and tied for third place in the NL West and they are hoping to improve on that this season. The Padres suffered through plenty of injuries last season but the reality is they failed to hit the baseball. Carlos Quentin is back after playing 82 games last season and hitting .275 while Yonder Alonso hit .281 but played in just 97 games. Chris Denorfia stayed healthy and hit .279 and Will Venable hit .268. Most of the Padres off season acquisitions were on the mound getting Josh Johnson and Ian Kennedy but Johnson starts the season injured and Andrew Cashner gets the start here. Cashner was 10-9 last season with a 3.09 ERA with 128 strikeouts in 175 innings. The Padres open at home and facing the top team in the division they will get an immediate indication of where they stand.

The Los Angeles Dodgers started their 2014 season a week ago in Australia winning both games against the Arizona Diamondbacks. While the Dodgers got two wins start pitcher Clayton Kershaw injured his back as Did Yasiel Puig. Scott Van Slyke had two hits in three at bats including a home run, Juan Uribe had three hits, and Andre Ethier drove in two runs. For this game the Dodgers start Hyun-Jin Ryu who got one of the wins for LA in Australia. Ryu allowed two hits and struck out five over five scoreless innings.
San Diego is 10-4 in their last 14 home games, 7-1 in their last eight game one of a series, and 1-4 in Cashner’s last five starts against a team with a winning record. Los Angeles is 24-5 in game one of a series, 29-12on the road against a right-handed starter, and 4-1 in Ryu’s last five starts. Los Angeles has won seven of the last eight meetings of these two.
The Dodgers are the better team but getting the home team even up on Opening Day is worth the play here as Ryu isn't nearly the same pitcher on the road.
