The San Francisco Giants open 2014 when they visit the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday.
San Francisco fell off the map in 2013 for lack of a better word as both the work on the mound and at the plate struggled. Tim Lincecum has yet to come close to his Cy Young form while Ryan Vogelsong posted an ERA just south of six. Matt Cain couldn't buy a win and Madison Bumgarner didn't get run support. Of course run support was an issue throughout the year regardless of who was on the mound as the Giants were #21 in runs scored which means guys like Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval and Brandon Belt have to produce and get help. Bumgarner gets the ball Monday after a 13-9 campaign with a 2.77 ERA.

Arizona already has two games under their belt with a doubleheader in Australia with the Dodgers. Unfortunately they faced Kershaw and Ryu and lost both with Kershaw one of the best in the business and Ryu not too shabby. The offense did little against both guys which will be said many times over this season by LAD opponents. That being said we know nothing about the Snakes offense or pitching with a mere two games to go on. The bad news is Trevor Cahill struggled with eight hits and five runs allowed in a 7-6 game two loss but Mark Trumbo did hit his first homer in an Arizona uniform and Addison Reed struck out the side in his first appearance. In my view the Snakes real season opener is Monday when Brandon McCarthy takes the ball. McCarthy was 5-11 with a 4.53 ERA a year ago.
Based on 2013 Bumgarner was the Giants best chance at winning but will he get support to work with is the burning question. These early games are tough ones but I'll back the road team for now...
