The Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals open their 2014 MLB baseball seasons on Monday in Cincinnati in a National League Central rivalry game.
The Cincinnati Reds made it to the Wildcard playoff game but it was one and done as they lost to the Pirates. The Reds battled it last season and were within striking distance of first place all season long but in the end they came up short. Joey Votto is the leader of the Reds and is one of the best hitters in the game. Brandon Phillips plays at an All Star level while Billy Hamilton takes over in center field. Jay Bruce and Ryan Ludwick round out the outfield as Cincinnati looks to replace Shin-Soo Choo. Johnny Cueto gets the start for Opening Day and while he missed a good portion of last year he is one of the very best in the game. With Aroldis Chapman sidelined for several months the Reds will look for a new closer and J.J. Hoover should get a look in that role.

The St. Louis Cardinals made the World Series but they showed little resistance losing to the Boston Red Sox who were simply a team of destiny. The Cardinals are locked and loaded to get back to the Fall Classic but it won’t be easy with the NL Central looking loaded again. Yadier Molina is the leader of the Cards with both his bat and his arm and glove. Matt Carpenter is back at third base, Matt Adams should be full time at first, and Allen Craig will be playing right field on what looks to be a loaded St. Louis batting order. Adam Wainwright gets the opening day start as he is coming off yet another monster year where he got considerable CY Young Award consideration. Trevor Rosenthal appears to be the closer for the Cardinals this year.
Cincinnati is 0-5 in their last five home games, 0-4 against the NL Central, and 20-6 in Cueto’s last 26 home starts. St. Louis is 13-4 in their last 17 NL Central games, 22-8 against a right-handed starter, and 7-3 in Wainwright’s last 10 starts. St. Louis is 2-6 in Wainwright’s last eight starts against the Reds.
Cueto is a master at home and I expect him to come up big here in a tight one.
