The Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners face off on Monday in Anaheim in a American League West Opening Day matchup.
The Los Angles Angels were one of the most disappointing teams in baseball last season as a big payroll yielded subpar results and no post season. The Angels finished six games under .500 last seasom and they were 18 games behind the Oakland A’s in the AL West. A few year’s back the Angels paid up for Albert Pujols but it hasn’t quite yielded the expected results. Mike Trout is one of the emerging stars of the game and is expected to lead at this point, Josh Hamilton is capable of putting up monster numbers, and David Freese will be playing third this season. Jered Weaver gets the start for the opener and he still one of the hardest throwers in the game. Ernesto Frieri man’s the closer role if the role for the Halo’s this year.

The Seattle Mariners simply had a problem scoring runs a season ago finishing 20 games under .500. Seattle was outscored by their opponents by 130 runs last season finish 25 games behind the leaders in the AL West. The big offseason move for Seattle was the signing of Robinson Cano who the Mariners hope adds some pop to the lineup. Logan Morrison comes to the M’s from Miami as Dustin Ackley and Corey Hart get help in the batting order. For Opening Day it is former Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez who simply seems to deliver year after year but he is coming off of a 12-10 year with a 3.04 ERA. Fernando Rodney comes to Seattle and assumes the closer role.
Los Angeles is 5-2 in their last seven games as a favorite, 22-6 following an off day, and 39-12 in Weaver’s last 51 home starts. Seattle is 2-6 in their last eight road games, 0-6 in game one of a series, and 1-5 in Hernandez’s last six starts. Los Angeles has won seven of the last 10 meetings when Weaver faces Hernandez.
With both pitchers well rested but with it being early in the season this one will come down to the bullpen and I like Seattle here at the price.
