The Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Thursday in Cincinnati after the two teams split the first two games of the series.
It took the Cincinnati Reds waiting out a delay and then the full nine innings to get the win on Wednesday but they got it done to even the low scoring series. Chris Heisey had a pinch hit single in the ninth inning to drive in the winning run and Joey Votto and Ryan Ludwick each had two hits as the Reds scored one run on six hits in all. Starting pitcher Tony Cingrani allowed two hits and struck out nine over 7.0 innings to not factor in the decision as J.J. Hoover got the win. For Thursday’s game the Reds start Homer Bailey who is capable of a big game every time out. Last season Bailey allowed 181 hits and 81 earned runs while striking out 199 over 209 innings for a 11-12 record and a 3.49 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
While the Cardinals were tough on the mound and on defense for the second consecutive game, they also failed to mount much offense in the losing effort. Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig, and Kolten Wong each had hits as the Cardinals failed to score a run on three total hits. Michael Wacha allowed three hits and struck out seven over 6.2 innings to not factor in the decision while Carlos Martinez took the loss. For Thursday’s game the Cardinals start Lance Lynn who was 15-10 with a 3.97 ERA last season allowing 189 hits and striking out 198 over 201.2 innings.
Cincinnati is 0-5 as a home favorite, 1-6 in their last seven home games, and 8-3 in Bailey’s last 11 starts. St. Louis is 27-14 in their last 41 games, 13-4 in game three of a series, and 3-8 in Lynn’s last 11 road starts. St. Louis is 5-1 in Lynn’s last six starts against the Reds.
With two total runs scored in the first two games the bats could wake up here but until I see it I am on the under.
I also have a play on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
