The Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants face off on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball as they close out their weekend National League West series.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were on a lot of lists as the favorites to win the World Series this season but after losing the first two games on this series it appears they may be hard pressed to win the division. On Saturday Yasiel Puig, Adrian Gonzalez, and Hanley Ramirez were all among those getting hits as the Dodgers scored two runs on nine hits in all. Starting pitcher Paul Maholm wasn’t good enough as he allowed seven hits and five earned runs while striking out just one over 4.1 innings to take the loss. For Sunday’s game the Dodgers start Zach Greinke who won his forst start of the year when he faced San Diego. Against the Padres Greinke allowed two hits and two runs while striking out five over 5.0 innings. The Dodgers are hoping Greinke can be the stopper with Kershaw still out.

The San Francisco Giants have won the World Series the last two even numbered years and while they missed the post season last year they lead the NL West in the early going this season. On Satuday Buster Posey had two hits including a home run, Pablo Sandoval and Michael Morse had home runs, and Hunter Pence and Angel Pagan each had two hits as the Giants scored seven runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner allowed eight hits and two runes while striking out 10 over 6.1 innings to get the win and go to 1-0 on the season. For Sunday Night’s game the Giants start Matt Cain who had a no decision in his last start. In his last outing Cain allowed Seven hits and three runs, two of them earned, while striking out two over 5.0 innings of work. The Giants have faltered in years where they simply fail to stay healthy but when they are at full strength they can compete with anyone.
Los Angeles is 20-7 at home against a right-handed starter, 3-7 in game three of a series, and 20-6 in Greinke’s last 26 starts. San Francisco is 7-3 in game three of a series, 6-1 in their last seven games, and 3-13 in Cain’s last 16 starts. San Francisco has won seven of the last eight meetings of these two but just 1-6 in Cain’s last seven starts.
