The St Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates take the field in the series rubber match on Sunday.
Give a good pitcher an early lead and more often then not good things generally happen. That was the script the Cardinals followed to a 6-1 decision at Pittsburgh on Saturday. Starter Joe Kelly was staked to a three run lead in the first and he and three relievers took over from there. Kelly allowed the lone run on six hits and four BB over 5.1 innings to get the win while Jhonny Peralta slugged a two run bomb with Yadier Molina going solo to lead an eight hit, four walk attack. Ace Adam Wainwright looks to pitch the Cards to the series win at Pittsburgh on Sunday. Wainwright was outstanding in a 1-0 victory at Cincinnati in his first start with a three hit shutout over seven frames while whiffing nine.

On paper the Pirates seemed to have an edge on the mound versus St Louis Saturday but this game was played on the field...unfortunately. Lefty Francisco Liriano had dominated the Cardinals a season ago but not this time as he was charged with four runs on seven hits and a pair of bases on balls over six frames with Jeanmar Gomez unable to hold the fort with a pair of runs plated in three innings. The bats posted six hits and walked five times but never sustained anything with Russell Martin driving in Travis Snider in the 3rd with the Buccos lone run. The Pirates give Sunday's start to newcomer Edinson Volquez for his first start of the 2014 campaign. Volquez started 27 games for San Diego a year ago, compiling a 9-10 record and 6.01 ERA.
I'll cut to the chase here. I hate chalk especially on the road but I think it's Wainwright and the Cardinals or walk away here...
