The Oakland Athletics and the Minnesota Twins meet Friday in MLB action from Target Field. Oakland played the Rays this week, falling in three consecutive games. As for Minnesota, they’re coming off a series versus the Orioles. The Twins won two of the first three games, then in the Thursday finale Minnesota lost by two runs. Oakland had zero luck versus the Rays this week, taking losses 6-1, 10-7 and 3-0 in the three-game series. In the finale, A’s pitcher Frankie Montas put up 7.0 clean innings in the start with four hits and one walk. In spite of that, Oakland has now lost six straight games.

Starting pitcher for the A’s on Friday will be Cole Irvin. Across his five starts this year Irvin is 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA. In 27.2 innings total he’s put up 25 hits, nine earned, seven walks and 18 strikeouts.

Over on the Twins’ side, they beat the Orioles 2-1 Monday and 7-2 Tuesday before a 9-4 loss in the Wednesday game three. On Thursday in the finale, Minnesota gave up 11 hits in a 5-3 loss. Starter Chris Archer put up 4.0 innings with two earned on five hits.

For the starter gig in the Friday opener, the Twins will hand the ball to Josh Winder. In four appearances (one start) this year), Winder is 1-0 with a 2.20 ERA. In 16.1 innings total he’s put up nine hits, four earned, four walks and 12 strikeouts.

The A’s are 90-34 in their last 124 versus the AL Central and 1-5 in their last six after an off day. Oakland is 0-4 in their last five Friday games.

Meanwhile, the Twins are 10-2 in their last 12 with a total of 7.0-8.5 and the under is 4-1 in their last five in game one of a series. The under is 11-2-1 in Minnesota’s last 14 versus the AL West.

PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Oakland here. The bad news for the A’s is that they’ve scored one run or fewer in three of their last five games. The good news is that Irvin is on the hill for this opener. In his last three starts combined, Irvin has just two earned on 13 hits and six walks across 16.0 innings total. If he can post a quality start—and if Oakland can managed a few knocks on offense—I think the A’s have a decent shot at a win.
