The Tampa Bay Rays and Kansas City Royals clash at Kauffman Stadium in Wedneday afternoon action.
Tampa Bay is looking for big things this season but that means the work on the mound will need more help from their bats. That didn't happen Tuesday but the pitching carried the team to a 1-0 decision with starter Chris Archer tossing a six hit shutout overseven innings with three relievers putting up zeros long enough for the offense to get something going. The Rays mustered just four hits and walked once with James Loney driving in Wil Myers in the 9th. Jake Odorizzi will be on the bump for Wednesday's early afternoon battle with Kansas City. Odorizzi was outstanding in his first start when he beat Texas 8-1 with a three hit shutout over six innings.

The Royals are another team that is expecting big things in 2014 and that means more consistency from the arms and bats. The team made some strides a year ago and have a nice foundation to build on but just have to perform day in and day out. That wasn't the case Tuesday with the pitching doing all the heavy lifting while the offense squandered too many opportunities. The bats totaled nine hits and walked three times but left ten runners on base. Starter Yordano Ventura tossed a two hitter over six scoreless frames before Greg Holland took the loss with a 9th inning run allowed on two hits to absorb the loss. The Royals hand the ball to Jeremy Guthrie to tame the Tampa Bay offense on Wednesday. Guthrie won his first start 7-5 versus the White Sox in which he gave up four runs on seven hits and four BB through 5.2 innings.
I don't really have a great feel for this one as Odorizzi has little experience with a challenged offense behind him. I will back the visitors in what looks like a toss up to me...
