The Boston Red Sox head to the Big Apple to face the New York Yankees on Thursday.
I'm sure Boston would have liked to be hot right out of the gate but I'm sure they are not worried as they improved to 4-5 after knocking off visiting Texas 4-2 on Wednesday. A three run 8th inning rally erased a 3-1 deficit and Koji Uehara tossed a perfect 9th for save number two. Starter Jake Peavy allowed just a single run on three hits and four BB in 6.2 but did not get a decision. The offense mustered four hits and walked seven times with David Ortiz leaving the yard and driving in three. The Red Sox send Clay Buchholz to the bump to open a weekend series with the Yankees. Buchholz was hit hard his first time out with six runs scored on 13 hits including two homers in 4.1 frames.

I think a quick start was at the top of the Yankees wish list entering 2014 which is obviously an ideal scenario for any team in the competitive American League East. The Bronx Bombers are still working on that hot start after the relief corps gave up a pair of 9th inning runs in a 5-4 loss Wednesday. Masahiro Tanaka allowed three second inning runs before settling down in a seven inning stint with Shawn Kelley giving up the two runs in the 9th on four hits to take the loss. New York had plenty of runners on a ten hit, two walk attack with Carlos Beltran and Kelly Johnson leaving the yard. Michael Pineda missed 2012 and 2013 with arm problems but his return to the majors was outstanding despite a 4-0 loss at Toronto. Pineda gave up a single run on five hits covering six innings.
I'm not sure about this one but if we see the Buchholz of a year ago I like Boston. We'll have to wait and see what Pineda does after missing two years so tread lightly here...
