The 7-2 Washington Nationals take to the road for a weekend series at the Atlanta Braves beginning Friday at 7:35PM.
The Nats made it their second sweep in their first three series on Thursday with an early afternoon win over the Miami Marlins 7-1 at Nationals Park. The Nats started slow out of the gates offensively, but were aided by the strong pitching of ace Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg fanned 12 in 6.2 innings pitched and allowed just 3 total hits. After the Marlins cut it to 2-1 in the 7th, the Nats bats came alive in the bottom of the 8th with 5 runs to put the game away. Ian Desmond capped the inning with a grand slam that put the game way out of reach. Desmond finished the game 2-4 with 4 RBI’s and Adam LaRoche added a 2-4 showing as well for the first place Nationals.

Atlanta sits at 5-3 on the year and fell to New York in a late contest Thursday night. The Braves played from behind all game and were unable to match the Mets bats late in the game as they scored runs in 3 of the final 5 innings to seal the deal. Justin Upton was the most effective Brave in this one, going 3-4 and knocking in 3 runs for the game -- Upton’s second blast carried an impressive 477 feet. Hale started for the Braves but only lasted a batter into the 4th after giving up four runs on five hits and tallying just 2 K’s. Dan Uggla continues to struggle -- he finished 0-3 for the game and is now batting .176 on the season.
These two rivals always duel it out when they play one another. The Braves have had the edge at home dating back to last season and were able to take 2 out of 3 opening week in Washington to spoil their first homestand of the year. I like the home field advantage for the Braves to be the difference as they get the narrow win here on their way to a series win this weekend.
