The St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs face off on Friday in one of the oldest rivalries in all of sports.
The St. Louis Cardinals are in the middle of the pack in the National League Central as they play their second home series of the season. The Chicago Cubs are taking their lumps this season as part of the building process and they are in last place in the NL Central. The Cubs are 1-2 on the road this season and overall they have been outscored by just three runs. Chicago is hitting .452, Anthony Rizzo is hitting .371, and Starlin Castro is hitting .342. The Chicago pitching staff has an ERA of 3.50 with the starters at 2.95 and the bullpen at 4.45. For game one at Busch Stadium the Cubs start Jeff Samardjziia who is still looking for his first win of the season. So far this year Samardzija has allowed 11 hits and two earned runs while striking out 11 over 14 innings for a 0-1 record and a 1.29 ERA.
St. Louis is 40-15 in their last 55 home games, 17-8 following an off day, and 8-1 in Kelly’s last nine home starts. Chicago is 21-28 in their last 59 games, 43-88 against a team with a winning record, and 0-4 in Smardzjia’s last four road starts. Chicago is 0-5 in their last five games against St. Louis.
The Cubs haven’t been good but Samadzija is capable of tossing a big one and against Kelly I will roll the dice with the road team.
