The San Diego Padres and the Detroit Tigers face off on Saturday at Petco Park for game two of their interleague series.
The San Diego Padres have plenty of worth to do this season but they showed some of their promise on Friday beating the Tigers. Chase Headley had two hits including a home run while Everth Cabrera, Seth Smith, Yonder Alonso, and Rene Rivera each had two hits as they Padres scored six runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Andrew Cashner went the distance allowing one hit and striking out 11 over 9.0 innings. For Saturday’s game the Padres start Ina Kennedy who is coming off of a strong effort. For the season Kennedy has allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out nine over 11 innings for a 1-1 record and a 3.27 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers continue to lead the AL Central but their lea shrunk on Friday losing to the Padres. Rajai Davis had Detroit’s only hit and Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez each had walks as the Tigers were one hit and shut out. Starting pitcher Rick Porcello allowed 10 hits and five runs while striking out five over 6.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-1 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Tigers start Justin Verlander who is looking for his first win of the year. For the season Verlander has allowed 11 hits and four runs while striking out five over 14 innings for a 0-1 record and a 2.57 ERA.
San Diego is 8-3 in their last 11 home games against a right-handed starter, 1-5 in game two of a series, and 5-2 in Kennedy’s last seven starts. Detroit is 2-5 as a road favorite, 1-5 in their last six road games, and 3-12 in Verlander’s last 15 starts. Detroit is 5-2 in the last eight meetings of these two.
Verlander hasn’t been getting wins but I expect the Tigers to turn that trend around and get the win here.
