The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals will play Saturday afternoon in game 2 of a three-game series. The Cubs won game 1, 6-3 in the 11th inning.
The Cubs have now won three of their last five games and hoping to build a little momentum early in the season. The Cubs have surprisingly been getting the job done offensively, scoring four or more runs in five straight games. Starlin Castro is leading the way with 13 hits and seven RBI. Carlos Villanueva hasn’t seen that type of run support so far this season, as he’s pitched 6.1 innings in three different games and has struck out four batters and allowed three runs. This will be Villanueva’s second start of the season, and he’s 5-4 with a 3.44 ERA in 10 career starts against the Cardinals.
USA TODAY Sports
The Cardinals have now lost two straight and three of their last five games after entering the year as one of the NL favorites. Despite the losses, the Cardinals have allowed two or less runs in four of their first 10 games this season. Adam Wainwright is the perfect man to add to that total, as he’s 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA and has 16 strikeouts in just 14 innings pitched. Wainwright has started 22 games against the Cubs in his career, and he’s 8-6 with an ERA of 4.24.
The Cubs are 3-9 in Villanueva's last 12 starts and 1-4 in their last 5 during game 2 of a series. The Cardinals are 6-1 in Wainwright's last 7 starts as a home favorite and 1-4 in Wainwright's last 5 starts. The Cardinals are 1-4 in Wainwright's last 5 home starts vs. Cubs.
Call me crazy, but there's value in taking the Cubs in this matchup. The Cubs have had Wainwright's number recently, and they've been hitting the ball pretty well. Villanueva has been decent in limited action this season and could have a big day against a Cardinals lineup that is struggling to hit the ball.
Give me the Cubs for the sweet price.
