The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds meet in afternoon NL Central Action Wednesday afternoon at 12:35PM on Fox Sports OH.
The Pirates currently sit at 7-7 on the season but find themselves 2-5 away from home as they face rival Cinncinatti. The Pirates will send Francisco Liriano to the mound (0-2, 4.00 ERA). Liriano has struggled somewhat in his first few starts with not getting enough run support -- the big arm pitcher does lead the team with 21 strikeouts (7.0 per game average). On the offensive end, the Pirates are led in average by Neil Walker (.310) -- Walker also leads the team with 7 home runs and 11 RBIs on the year. Walker now has three home runs in the Pirates past two contests.

The Reds are off to a rough start early this season and currently sit in last place in the division at 5-9. The main reason for the Reds struggles appear to be their underwhelming showing at the plate thus far -- after solid offensive output most of the past two seasons, some of the Reds key offensive pieces have gotten off to slow starts. Todd Frazier leads the team in homers with 5 and also leads the team in RBI’s with 10 -- a number that is pretty low through 16 games. Brandon Phillips has been solid with a .328 average and 20 hits on the season. On the mound, the Reds will send Johnny Cueto to pitch Wednesday. Cueto is 0-2 but has a solid ERA (2.14) and a team leading 23 strikeouts.
These two teams are fairly evenly matched and have been contenders the past two seasons. I like the pitching matchup to favor Cinnci here and the home field advantage to also play a big role. Look for Cueto to get in the win column as he outduels Liriano and Votto has a strong day at the plate in the Reds victory and series clincher.
