The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers face off on Friday in game two of their NL Central series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t looked like the playoff team they were last season but they jumped all over the Brewers in game one on Thursday. Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez, Gaby Sanchez, and Josh Harrison each hit home runs as the Pirates scored 11 runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Edinson Volquez allowed eight hits and two runs while striking out three over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 1-0 for the season. For Friday’s game the Pirates start Charlie Morton who is still looking for a win this season. For the season Morton has allowed 18 hits and seven earned runs while striking out 14 over 19 innings for a 0-1 record and a 3.32 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Milwaukee Brewers are still in first place in the NL Central but they appear to be losing their early season momentum. On Thursday Jonathan Lucroy and Scooter Gennett each had two hits and Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez each had hits but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Brewers scored just two runs on eight hits. Starting pitch Yovani Gallardo allowed three hits and two runs while striking out six over 6.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Rob Wooten took the loss pitching just a third of an inning. For Friday’s game Milwaukee starts Kyle Lohse who has won his last two starts. For the season Lohse has allowed 16 hits and seven runs while striking out 21 over 20.2 innings for a 2-1 record and a 3.05 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 2-5 in their last seven games, 42-20 as a home favorite, and 5-2 I Morton’s last seven starts as a favorite. Milwaukee is 5-0 as an underdog, 10-3 in their last 13 games, and 4-0 in Lohse’s last four starts as an underdog. Milwaukee is 2-8 in their last 10 games in Pittsburgh.
We saw plenty of scoring Thursday and I believe we see enough here to go over the total.
