The Philadelphia Phillies and Colorado Rockies will clash Saturday night for game two of a three-game series. The Rockies won game one, 12-1.
The Phillies have lost three of their last four games and were absolutely embarrassed on Friday. Jonathan Pettibone allowed eight runs in four innings and the lineup produced only two hits and struck out seven times. The Phillies have scored one or less runs in their last three games. Knowing this, Kyle Kendrick has to be on his A game, as he’s 0-1 on the season with a 3.50 ERA and has 14 strikeouts in 18 innings while allowing 20 hits. Kendrick is 3-2 with a 5.63 ERA in 10 career starts against the Rockies.
USA TODAY Sports
The Rockies have won three of their last four games and continue to get solid outings from their pitching staff. Sure, the offense shined in game one by driving in 12 runs on 18 hits, but the Rockies have allowed no more than two runs in three of their last four games. Jordan Lyles will put his 2-0 record and 4.32 ERA on the line when he takes the mound Saturday. Lyles has allowed 16 hits in 16.2 innings of work and has 12 strikeouts. In two career starts against the Phillies, Lyles is 0-0 with a 4.09 ERA.
The Phillies are 0-6 in Kendrick's last 6 road starts and 2-5 in Kendrick's last 7 starts overall. The Rockies are 7-18 in their last 25 during game 2 of a series and 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The Phillies are 7-1 in Kendrick's last 8 starts vs. Rockies.
It’s hard to back the Phillies after their horrible performance on Friday, and it doesn’t help that they’ve been in a funk before then. However, we’re getting plus money with Kendrick, a pitcher who has had solid success against the Rockies in his career.
I’ll take my chances with Philadelphia bouncing back.
