The San Diego Padres tangle with the Washington Nationals in game two of their series.
San Diego limped in to Washington with losses in three of four yet came away with a 4-3 victory in 12 innings despite losing Chase Headley to a calf injury. The Padres were in constant trouble the entire night but wiggled out of danger most of the time. Eric Stults gave up a pair of runs on ten hits over 5.1 frames with six relievers finishing up. The bats made the most of eight hits and four BB with Xavier Nady rapping an RBI hit to win it in extras while Yasmani Gradal doubled in two. San Diego turns to Robbie Erlin on the mound in game number two. Erlin has a WHIP of 0.98 because he has allowed 13 hits in 17.1 innings but his 4.15 ERA says he has given up hits at key times.

I thought the Nationals had the momentum heading in to Thursday's bout with San Diego after their four run 9th versus the Angels gave them an unexpected victory. I was off the mark as the offense constantly threatened but struggled to get the big hit. Jordan Zimmerman allowed three runs on five hits through six frames before Craig Stammen was tagged with the loss in a three inning stint out of the pen. The Nats hit the ball well with 16 hits and a pair of free passes but struggled to get the the one hit that would break the game open. Adam LaRoche and Danny Espinosa slugged solo homers but the glaring stat was the numerous runners LOB. Washington hands the ball to Stephen Strasburg for his 6th start of 2014. Strasburg has not found the groove as of yet with a 1-2 record and 5.33 ERA covering 27 innings pitched with a pair of four inning stints.
Stephen Stasburg and Washington are the best options here but something just seems to be missing with this team right now. I thing the Nats win this game most of the time but I would look elsewhere to put my money...
