The Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles will meet Sunday afternoon in a rubber game.
The Royals lost 3-2 in the 10th inning on Saturday, and have now lost five of their last seven games. As has been the case for much of the season, the Royals simply aren’t scoring runs, as they’ve been held to three or less runs in five of their last seven games and are 0-12 when scoring three or less this season. Alcides Escobar leads the Royals with 11 runs scored and has scored nine of them in his last nine games. Taking the mound Sunday will be James Shields, who is 2-2 with a 1.91 ERA and has 35 strikeouts in 33 innings. Shields is 9-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 24 career starts against the Orioles.
USA TODAY Sports
The Orioles have put together a nice little run with wins in four of their last five games, and they’re one game above a .500 record for the third time this season. The Orioles offense has been on a tear recently, scoring seven or more runs in three of their last four wins, and Nick Markakis has nine hits in his last six games. Chris Davis has been placed on the DL. Taking the mound will be Miguel Gonzalez, who is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA and has 17 strikeouts in 20 innings. Gonzalez is 1-1 with a 4.97 ERA in two career starts against the Royals.
The Royals are 10-1 in Shields' last 11 starts as a road favorite and 20-8 in Shields' last 28 starts. The Orioles are 15-3 in Gonzalez's last 18 home starts and 1-5 in Gonzalez's last 6 starts as an underdog.
I like the value we're getting with Shields, a pitcher who has found his form and is pitching like he did a few years ago. The Orioles have been up and done all season. I'll take the more consistent team and better pitcher at this price.
