The Washington Nationals shoot for the series win versus the visiting San Diego Padres on Sunday.
It's no big secret the Padres biggest area of concern is their issues at the plate because that has been a problem over recent years. After winning the series opener on Thursday San Diego has dropped the next two by a combined 15-1 following Saturday's 4-0 defeat. Andrew Cashner had no answer on the mound with all four runs plated on nine hits in six innings with a three run first sealing his team's fate. SD never got going offensively with only three hits and a walk overall and never threatened. San Diego hopes to gain a split with Washington when they tab Ian Kennedy for Sunday's start. Kennedy has thrown the ball well the past two times out with a combined four runs allowed over eleven innings.

Following consecutive victories against visiting San Diego the Nationals have won three of four which they hope is the beginning of a prolonged hot streak. Washington needs to get hot to keep Atlanta from running away with the division while keeping an eye on the Wild Card somewhere down the road. The Padres feeble offense was just what the doctor ordered Saturday as Tanner Roark mowed down this lineup with a complete game three hit shutout. The produced ten hits and walked once with Denard Span, Adam LaRoche, Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa driving in runs. A struggling Taylor Jordan looks to right the ship when he faces off with San Diego at home. Jordan is riding a three game skid in which has given up 14 runs on 25 hits and four walks in 15.1 frames.
I don't know if Washington has gotten the ship pointed in the right direction or if playing the Padres is what it is. The question is whether Kennedy can control the scoreboard and can the offense finally plate some runs. I don't have the greatest feel for this and it's borderline lunacy betting San Diego now so use caution...
