The Tampa Bay Rays head to Fenway Park to open a weekday series with the Boston Red Sox.
Tampa hasn't found the groove yet and need to get going soon just to hang around the top of the American League East to cut down on the ground that needs to be made up later. The Rays have been slow starters and are in the midst of a mini skid with losses in five of six after falling to the White Sox 7-3 on Monday. Neither the pitching or hitting stood out with starter Jake Odorizzi giving up four runs on eight hits in 4.1 frames while Jake McGee followed with a pair of runs scored in 1.1 innings. The offense never got untracked on seven hits and a trio of BB and couldn't keep the momentum going after a two run first. Erik Bedard will be on the mound to face Boston in the first game of the series Tuesday. Bedard has struggled in his only two starts with a combined eight runs scored on eleven hits in 7.2 frames.

Boston has been a bit erratic in the early going which means the good times don't seem to last very long. The Red Sox had a golden opportunity to sweep Toronto on the road Sunday but instead struggled in most areas of a 7-1 defeat. Jon Lester looked ordinary with four runs plated on five hits in feven innings followed by Andrew Miller who was charged with three runs (two earned) on three hits in just 1/3 of an inning. That was game over with the bats totaling six hits and unable to get anything going against RA Dickey's knuckleball except Jackie Bradley's RBI single. The Red Sox give the ball to John Lackey to open the series on the mound versus Tampa Bay. Lackey comes in off a 5-1 victory over the Yankees where he allowed the lone run in eight innings while striking out eleven.
I'm not a big John Lackey fan ever since he came over from the Angels but I believe he has the edge on the mound. The flip side to backing either team is both are not playing well so use caution...
