The Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies will begin a three-game series that starts Friday night.
The Nationals are playing pretty well lately with wins in four of their last five games and a lot of that success starts with their pitching staff. The Nationals have allowed one or less runs in three of the games during this winning stretch, and the rotation has struck out 271 batters in 253.2 innings. Offensively, Anthony Rendon has really picked up the pace with Bryce Harper out, as he has 11 hits in his last five games. Taking the mound for the Nationals on Friday will be Stephen Strasburg, who is 2-2 with a 4.24 ERA and has struck out 53 batters in 34 innings. Strasburg is 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA in six career starts against the Phillies.
USA TODAY Sports
The Phillies are looking to top a .500 record for the fourth time this season as they’ve won six of their last nine games. Surprisingly, a lot of the Phillies recent success has come from their batting lineup considering they’ve scored four or more runs in five of their last nine games. Ben Revere has six multi hit performances in his last eight games and Marlon Byrd is off to a hot start with a team-leading 17 RBI. Starting on Friday will be Cliff Lee, who is 3-2 with a 3.29 ERA and he has 40 strikeouts in 41 innings. Lee is 6-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 11 career starts against the Nationals.
The Nationals are 5-0 in their last 5 games following an off day and 5-2 in Strasburg's last 7 road starts. The Phillies are 5-2 in their last 7 vs. a team with a winning record and 2-6 in Lee's last 8 starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Nationals are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings vs. the Phillies.
Ask yourself how often you are going to get Strasburg at plus money. Sure, he hasn't been as great as he has been in the past, but he's still a young pitcher with terrific stuff and has had success in his career against the Phillies.
I like the Nationals in this one given the value.
