The Cleveland Indians and the Chicago White Sox face off on Saturday at Progressive Field for game two of their AL Central series.
The Cleveland Indians took advantage of their offensive opportunities on Friday as they pounded the White Sox to open their weekend series. Carlos Sanata had two hits including a home run, Michael Brantley had three hits including a home run, and Mike Aviles and Nick Swisher had two hits each as the Indians scored 12 runs on 13 hits. Starting pitcher Danny Salazar allowed seven hits and five runs while striking out six over 5.0 innings to get the win and go to 1-3 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Indians start Justin Masterson who lost his only start this season. For the year Masterson has allowed 38 hits and 19 earned runs while striking out 35 over 35.1 innings for a 0-1 record and a 4.84 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Chicago White Sox had plenty of chances to get some runs across the plate on Friday but they squandered most of them and took the loss to the Indians. Jose Abreu hit a home run, Adrian Nieto had three hits, and Alexei Ramirez and Alejando De Aza each had two hits as the White Sox scored five runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher John Danks just didn’t have his best stuff as he allowed 10 hits and eight runs while striking out three over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-2 for the season. For Satuday’s rematch the White Sox start Scott Carroll who is making his second Major league start after eight years in the Minors. In his last start against the Rays Carroll allowed six hits and tow runs, one earned, while striking out three over 7.1 innings to get the win.
Cleveland is 5-1 in their last six home games, 37-16 as a favorite, and 13-5 in Masterson’s last 18 starts as a favorite. Chicago is 14-34 as an underdog, 20-52 in their last 72 road games, and 1-5 against the AL Central. Chicago is 0-7 in their last seven games in Cleveland.
I am less than thrilled with how Masterson has played this season and at this price the Sox are well worth a play.
