The Boston Red Sox will go for the sweep over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon.
The Athletics pitching staff really hasn’t handled the Red Sox batting lineup well in this series, giving up a combined 13 runs in the first two games. That’s a far cry from an A’s rotation that allowed three or less runs in five of their last eight games previously. The Athletics offense has scored only four runs in this series, but Josh Donaldson has 11 hits and nine RBI in his last 10 games. Getting the nod for the A’s is Sonny Gray, who is 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA and has 37 strikeouts in 41 innings. This will be Gray’s first career game against the Red Sox.

The Red Sox have now won five of their last eight games and are one game back from a .500 record. Of course, the Red Sox offense has dominated this series, including Dustin Pedroia who has three hits, four RBI and three walks in the first two games. But the Red Sox pitching staff has done fairly well, quieting a solid A’s lineup to four runs and nine hits. John Lackey looks to keep the train running, as he’s 4-2 with a 3.83 ERA and has 39 strikeouts in 40 innings. Lackey is 19-6 with a 2.90 ERA in 34 career starts against the Athletics.
The Athletics are 4-0 in Gray's last 4 road starts and 7-0 in Gray's last 7 starts with 5 days of rest. The Red Sox are 10-4 in Lackey's last 14 starts and 4-1 in Lackey's last 5 home starts.
I usually take great pitchers and the plus money, but there isn't a ton of juice with the Red Sox. Not only are the Red Sox the more talented team, but they have creamed the A's in the first two games and have a pitcher in Lackey who has terrific success against Oakland in his career.
Take the Red Sox for the sweep.
