The Diamondbacks look to get their season back on track as they continue their road trip in San Diego on Sunday.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have easily been one of the league’s biggest disappointments this season as many expected they would challenge for at least a wild card spot after they acquired Mark Trumbo from the Angels but they currently hold down the league’s worst record. The D-Backs are 11-22 on the year and send a 2-3 Wade Miley to the bump who will look to bring down his ugly 5.36 ERA in the pitcher friendly Petco Park and at the same time guide his team to victory. The Diamondbacks do have a solid lineup led by Paul Goldschmidt and still could right the ship on what has been a sloppy start to the year but they’ll need some more quality efforts from their starting rotation which could perhaps involve the introduction of top prospect Archie Bradley. Despite their lousy record, the D-Backs have actually win 8 of their 11 games on the road and with Tyson Ross throwing the ball for San Diego this could be a solid opportunity for the Diamondbacks to get in the win column as Ross has been mediocre thus far.

The Padres head into Sunday’s contest sitting five games under .500 but they aren’t expected to compete for a playoff spot this season despite a huge hype surrounding Andrew Cashner who has emerged into the team’s ace on the hill. San Diego does have some guys who can swing the bat with Will Venable, Jedd Gyorko, and EVerth Cabrera called upon to handle the bulk of the load but the bottom line remains for this team is that they’re really not that good and with the talent level being what it is in the NL West I can’t fathom how they will challenge for the division or a wild card spot. This is a pretty ugly matchup when you look at the standings and while the Padres may have the edge on the mound with Ross going up against a struggling Miley I still like this spot for Arizona as I think they are a much better team than their record indicates while the Padres are right around where they should be. Tread lightly but I’d recommend a small play on the visitors.
