The Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners square off in game two at Safeco field Friday.
Kansas City was a team that hung around in the American League Central for quite awhile in 2013 and based on that they were given a shot to challenge this year. That hasn't happened yet with neither the hitting or pitching it together. On Thursday it was the offense that came up short in a 1-0 loss at Safeco Field which spoiled a great effort on the mound by Danny Duffy who gave up the lone run on two hits and a trio of walks over six frames. The offense posted four hits and a pair of BB and didn't threaten until two were on in the 9th. Left hander Jason Vargas gets the call to the mound in game two at Seattle. Vargas opened the year with five quality starts before struggling through back to bck poor efforts where 12 runs were plated in 11.1 innings.

Seattle is the hottest team in the American League West as they entered Thursday's bout with Kansas City as winners in eight of ten. In this stretch the offense has done more then their share however in outlasting the Royals in the series opener the work on the mound was front and center in a 1-0 decision. Hisashi Iwakuma was outstanding in just his second start since coming off the disabled list with a four hit shutout over eight innings. The offense was silent on only two hitsand three free passes with Corey Hart singling in the only run in the third inning. Seattle turns to Brandon Mauer on the bump for Friday's outing versus Kansas City. Mauer has only three 2014 starts where he has gone 1-0 with an ERA just south of seven covering 13 frames.
I would say Vargas has the edge on the mound over Mauer who hasn't been good so if the Mariners are going to need runs. I'll back the hotter team but this isn't a great situation with a hurler who hasn't done much...
