The St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates will begin a three-game series on Friday night. This is the third time these teams have met this season and both teams won a series.
The Cardinals have won three of their last four games and are one game above .500. The Cardinals offense is finally starting to produce offensively, scoring four or more runs in seven of their last nine games. Matt Holliday has six hits in his last three games and Jhonny Peralta is riding a six-game hitting streak. The Cardinals pitching staff remains top notch, allowing three or less runs in four of their last five games. Michael Wacha gets the start, and he’s 2-3 with a 2.55 ERA and has 50 strikeouts in 42.1 innings. This will be Wacha’s second career start against the Pirates.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pirates are still six games below .500, but have won four of their last six games. The issues for the Pirates remain on the offensive side, as they’ve been held to three or less runs in 18 of the first 34 games. Andrew McCutchen is the only starter with a batting average of .300 or higher. Pitching has also been a concern for the Pirates, as they have a team ERA of 3.90. Taking the mound Friday is Francisco Liriano, who is 0-3 with a 4.54 ERA and has 37 strikeouts in 37.2 innings. Liriano is 4-1 with a 1.85 ERA in six career starts against the Cardinals.
The Cardinals are 0-5 in Wacha's last 5 road starts and 0-4 in Wacha's last 4 starts. Pirates are 6-2 in Liriano's last 8 starts with 5 days of rest and 14-3 in Liriano's last 17 home starts. The Pirates are 5-1 in Liriano's last 6 starts vs. Cardinals.
Tough to go against Liriano at home. Despite his struggles this season, he's been money at home and is the better pitcher in this matchup when he's on. With the odds even, I'll take my chances with the Pirates on their home field.
