The Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics will play game two of three on Saturday night.
The Nationals have lost four of their last six games and were just shutout 8-0 by the Athletics on Friday. The Nationals are struggling to put runs on the board with Bryce Harper out of the lineup, as they’ve scored three or less runs in five of their last six games. Adam LaRoche does have seven RBI in his last 10 games and Ian Desmond has gotten on base in 13 straight games. Of course, the Nationals pitching has been strong, including Tanner Roark, who is 2-1 with a 4.17 ERA and has 31 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. This is the first time Roark has pitched against the A’s in his career.
USA TODAY Sports
The Athletics have won two straight games but have lost five of their last eight overall. Brandon Moss has eight RBI in his last 10 games and Yoenis Cespedes has homered three times in his last four games. Still, the Athletics have scored three or less runs in six of their last eight games. The A’s pitching has been nothing to sneeze at, including Sonny Gray, who is 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA and has 40 strikeouts in 47 innings. This is Gray’s first career game against the Nationals.
The Nationals are 1-4 in Roark's last 5 starts as an underdog and 1-4 in Roark's last 5 starts as a road underdog. The Athletics are 5-1 in Gray's last 6 starts and 8-0 in Gray's last 8 starts with 5 days of rest.
The A's have their best pitcher on the mound and are at home, while the Nationals have been struggling and just looked hopeless in a loss on Friday. There's little value in taking the ML, so I'm going with the Athletics run line in this matchup. Gray should pitch another gem and the A's should win by at least two.
