The Pittsburgh Pirates have had a tough start to the year but they are a win away from sweeping the Cardinals after winning on Saturday. Josh Harrison and Ike Davis had two hits each and Pedro Alvarez and Neil walker each had hits as the Pirates scored four runs on 11 hits. Starting pitcherEdinson Volquez allowed four hits and three runs while striking out four but lasting just 4.2 innings as jared Hughes got the win to go to 2-1 and mark Melancon earned his fourth save. For Sunday’s game the Pirates start Charlie Morton who is still looking for his first win of the year. For the season Morton has allowed 40 hits and 17 earned runs while striking out 28 over 44.1 innings for a 0-4 record and a 3.45 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals got out to an early lead on Saturday but they were unable to get any insurance runs and the lead didn’t hold up. Matt Carpenter, Matt Holliday, and Matt Adams each had hits as the Cardinals scored three runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Lance Lynn allowed nine hits and four runs while striking out five over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-2 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Cardinals start Shelby Miller who has won his last three starts. For the season Miller has allowed 35 hits ad 14 earned runs while striking out 31 over 39.1 innings for a 4-2 record and a 3.20 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 6-2 in their last eight home games, 6-2 against a right-handed starter, and 1-4 in Morton’s last five starts. St. Louis is 20-8 in game three of a series, 1-6 in their last seven road games against a team with a losing record, and 9-4 in Miller’s last 13 starts as an underdog. St. Louis is 4-12 in their last 16 games in Pittsburgh.
