The Colorado Rockies and Kansas City Royals will play a short two-game interleague series that begins on Tuesday.
The Rockies have won six of their last 10 games and are currently in second place in the NL West. The Rockies rely heavily on one of the top offenses in all of baseball, a lineup that has produced five or more runs 22 times this season. Troy Tulowitzki is back in MVP form, as he leads the Rockies with 11 homers and 33 RBI. Charlie Blackmon isn’t far behind, as he’s homered in back-to-back games and has four homeruns in his last nine games. Getting the start on Tuesday is Franklin Morales, who is 3-2 with a 5.18 ERA and has 33 strikeouts in 41.2 innings. This will be Morales’ fifth time pitching against the Royals, but his first career start.
USA TODAY Sports
The Royals have won four of their last six games, but are still one game back from a .500 record. The Royals haven’t been known for their offense this season, but they have scored six or more runs in three of their last five games. Omar Infante leads the Royals with 19 RBI and Eric Hosmer has nine RBI in his last 10 games. Of course, the Royals pitching is what has kept them in games this year, including James Shields, who is 4-3 with a 2.70 ERA and has 48 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. This will be Shields’ second career start against the Rockies.
The Rockies are 4-1 in Morales' last 5 starts and 6-2 in Morales' last 8 starts vs. a team with a losing record. The Royals are 4-1 in Shields' last 5 starts and 8-3 in Shields' last 11 starts after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game. The Rockies are 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
We're getting tremendous value with the Rockies consdiering they have been scoring a truckload of runs this season and the Royals have not. Granted, Shields has been a much better pitcher than Morales, however, I'll take my chances with the red hot Rockies bats in this game given the price we're getting them at.
