The Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins will square off for game one of three on Tuesday night at Target Field.
The Red Sox have won six of their last eight games and are sitting one game above a .500 record. While the Red Sox offense has been getting the job done at a high level, their pitching staff has allowed three or less runs in seven of their last eight games. Offensively, David Ortiz has a five-game hitting streak and A.J. Pierzynski has six RBI in his last nine games. Getting the start for the Sox is Felix Doubront, who is 1-3 with a 5.09 ERA and has 24 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. This game will be Doubront’s second career start against the Twins.
USA TODAY Sports
The Twins are two games back from .500 and have lost four of their last six games. The brutal Twins pitching staff has been a little more consistent lately, but it’s still allowed four or more runs in four of their last six games. Of course, the Twins have a team ERA of 4.66, which is good for 28th in the majors. Offensively, Brian Dozier has gotten on base in five straight games, but Jason Kubel has struck out 13 times in his last five games. Ricky Nolasco gets the nod, and he’s 2-3 with a 5.64 ERA and has 28 strikeouts in 44.2 innings. Nolasco is 2-2 with a 5.24 ERA in four career starts against the Red Sox.
The Red Sox are 6-2 in Doubront's last 8 starts vs. a team with a losing record and 10-4 in Doubront's last 14 starts vs. American League Central. The Twins are 3-10 in their last 13 during game 1 of a series and 1-8 in their last 9 games following an off day. The Red Sox are 6-0 in the last 6 meetings in Minnesota.
Nolasco is one of those pitchers I just don't trust due to his inconsistency. The Red Sox are playing at a high level on both sides of the ball and Doubront seems due for a solid outing. I'll take the Red Sox at the cheap price.
