The Los Angeles Angels are playing better than they have in recent years but they still have work to do if they want to be a post season contender. The Angels are 11-8 on the road, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they are three games out in the AL West. As a team the Angels are hitting .257 with Howie Kendrick at .313, Erick Aybar at .277, and Albert Pujols is hitting .276, and Mike Trout is hitting .273. The Angels pitching staff has an ERA of 3.78 with the starters at 3.63 and the bullpen at 4.11. For game one against the Phillies the Angels start Matt Shoemaker who is called up from the Minors to make the start. Shoemaker pitched out of the bullpen in April allowing three runs in 6 2/3 innings.
Philadelphia is 6-13 in their last 19 home games, 0-4 following an off day, and 0-4 in Lee’s last four home starts. Los Angeles is 6-1 in game one of a series, 20-6 against a team with a losing record, and 41-19 in their last 60 interleague road games. The Angels have beat the Phillies in the last five meetings of these two.
The Phils are the better option here as Shoemaker has yet to show he is Major League material and he is facing a likely first ballot Hall of Fame inductee in Lee.
