The Cleveland Indians and Toronto Blue Jays will play a three-game series for the second time this season. The Blue Jays won the earlier series, 2-1.
The Indians had Monday off and enter this matchup winners of five of their last six games. The Indians offense has woken up a bit, scoring four or more runs in five of their last six games, including 13 runs in a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Michael Brantley is riding an 11-game hitting streak and Yan Gomes has six RBI in his last seven games. The Indians pitching rotation has held up for the most part, including Justin Masterson, who is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA and has 48 strikeouts in 49 innings. Masterson is 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA in seven career starts against the Blue Jays.
USA TODAY Sports
The Blue Jays have won six of their last nine games, but just lost three of four against the Los Angeles Angels. The issues for the Blue Jays hasn’t changed, as their pitching staff has allowed four or more runs in five of their last seven games. The Blue Jays are ranked 25th in team ERA and are 2-19 this season when allowing more than three runs. Offensively, Edwin Encarnacion has seven extra-base hits in his last seven games. Taking the mound Tuesday is R.A. Dickey, who is 3-3 with a 4.72 ERA and has 41 strikeouts in 47.2 innings. Dickey is 2-2 with a 3.61 ERA in 11 career games against the Indians.
The Indians are 4-0 in their last 4 games following an off day and 4-1 in Masterson's last 5 road starts vs. a team with a losing record. The Blue Jays are 4-1 in Dickey's last 5 starts as a home favorite and 5-2 in Dickey's last 7 starts as a favorite.
Dickey isn't the same pitcher he was a year or two ago, and the Indians are playing some solid ball as of late. With the Indians coming off a day of rest, I'll take my chances with the plus money.
