The Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres face off on Thurssday at Great American Ballpark in game one of a double header as they continue their series.
The Cincinnati Reds were in a battle on Tuesday but they gave up the winning run late and were unable to counter. Brandon Phillips had three hits and Joey Votto and Billy Hamilton had hits but the Reds scored just one run on seven hits. Starting pitcher Mike Leake allowed just two hits and a runs while striking out five over 8.0 innings but didn’t get a decision as Aroldis Chapman took the loss. For Wednesday’s game the Reds start Johnny Cueto who hasn’t lost in over a month. For the season Cueto has allowed 30 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 68 over 63 innings for a 3-2 record and a 1.43 ERA.

The San Diego Padres Battled for the full nine innings on Tuesday and walked away with the win. Chase Headley hit the game winning home run and Seth Smith had two hits as the Padres scored two runs on three hits. Starting pitcher Andrew Cashner allowed seven hits and a run while striking out six over 7.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Joaquin Benoit got the win and Huston Street earned his 12th save. For Tuesday’s game the Padres start Ian Kennedy who had a no decision in his last start. For the season Kennedy has allowed 42 hits and 17 runs while striking out 56 over 49 innings for a 2-4 record and a 3.12 ERA.
Cincinnati is 5-2 against the NL West, 0-5 in game two of a series, and 21-7 in Cueto’s last 28 home starts. San Diego is 5-2 in their last seven road games with the total set at 7.5 or lower, 1-4 in game two of a series, and 1-4 in Kennedy’s last five starts with five days of rest. San Diego is 2-5 in their last seven games in Cincinnati.
Cueto just isn’t a pitcher you want to be on the other side of and I won’t be in this spot.
