The Los Angeles Dodgers visit Chase Field to open a series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.
The Dodgers are staying within striking distance of the division leading Giants but lost a game in the standings Wednesday as they were handed a 13-3 loss at home to Miami and rookie hurler Anthony DeSlafani. A modest two game win streak ended as starter Paul Malholm was blasted for ten runs (five earned) on eleven hits and three walks in just 3.2 innings to fall to 1-4. The bats posted ten hits and walked once but were up against the wall here with Carl Crawford smacking a solo homer with Andre Ethier and Yasiel Puig rapping RBI hits. Veteran Zack Greinke faces the Diamondbacks for the third time in 2014. In the first two meetings Greinke has allowed two runs on eleven hits in 11.1 innings.

The Diamondbacks have dug themselves a huge early season hole and are trying to climb out of it before the season gets any deeper. That means Arizona has to win series or 2014 could soon become a lost cause. The Snakes had a shot at taking their series with visiting Washington on Wednesday but instead fell to the Nationals by a 5-1 count thanks to Brad Ziegler who was tagged fo four runs in the 9th on four hits and two BB which squandered a great start from Brandon McCarthy who allowed two hits withone being a homer over eight frames. The offense didn't help the cause either with only six hits with Aaron Hill slugging his fourth homer of the year. Wade Miley gets the call to the mound versus the Dodgers having won this match up earlier in the year by a 4-2 count. Miley allowed a single run on two hits and five BB in six frames.
Greinke is putting up some lofty numbers and might very well have the pitching edge but I don't think the Dodgers laying chalk on the road is ideal...
