The Atlanta Braves are in first place in the NL East but they have been fairly shaky recently. The Braves are 9-9 on the road, 5-5 in their last 10 games, and they are 1.5 games ahead of the Nationals. As a team the Braves are hitting .231 with Freddie Freeman hitting .307, Justin Upton hitting .279, and Chris Johnson hitting .279. The Braves pitching staff has an ERA of 2.76 with the starters at 2.64 and the bullpen at 3.07. For game one against the Cardinals the Braves start Ervin Santana who hasn’t taken a loss this season. For the year Santana has allowed 32 hits and nine earned runs while striking out 43 over 40.2 innings for a 4-0 record and a 1.99 ERA.
St. Louis is 37-15 in their last 52 home games, 19-7 at home against a team with a winning record, and 12-4 in Lynn’s last 16 starts in game one of a series. Atlanta is 9-2 against the NL Central, 104 in game one of a series, and 5-1 in Santana’s last six starts. Atlanta is 2-5 in their last seven games against St. Louis.
The Braves are the better team and while the Cardinals are coming off of a win that was against the Cubs and facing the Braves and Santana they are up against much tougher here.
